Leo Varadkar: The Son Of Indian Immigrant To Become First Gay Irish PM…
Leo Varadkar, the 38-year-old son of an Indian immigrant was elected as Ireland’s new Prime Minister after winning the Fine Gael leadership concert on this Friday after the resignation of Enda Kenny last month. He is also the first openly gay Irish PM and the youngest leader of the country.
Earlier, he was serving as Minister of Social Protection in Ireland and stressed on equality by setting up same-sex marriage campaigns. Varadkar has received a lot of support by achieving two-thirds vote of the parliamentary party, which consists of 65% of total votes. He was very much known for his ideology in politics and image of progressing the country with conservative attitude. Between 2011- 2016, he was also the Minister of Transport, Tourism and the Minister for Health.
In 2015 during a radio interview by legalizing sexuality, he said that, “it’s not something that defines me, I’m not a half-Indian politician, or a doctor politician or a gay politician for that matter. It’s just part of who I am, it doesn’t define me, and it is the part of my character I suppose.
The fact that need to be noticed is, Indians are very supportive towards this win and celebrating as Varadkar is of Indian-origin, but they have to support and change their attitude towards Indian gay community too and celebrate their win too.
